A 61-year-old Dracut man was arrested Thursday and charged with sexually assaulting a child.

Brian Weed was accused of inappropriately touching a minor on more than one occasion inside his home at 5 Second St., which he shares with his brother, according to a police report viewed in court.

Weed was arraigned Friday in Lowell District Court and charged with indecent assault and battery on a child under 14 years old, aggravated rape, and rape of a child with force.

A Department of Children and Families social worker notified police on July 12 after learning of the accusations during a scheduled home visit unrelated to the incident, Dracut police said.

Police documents suggest that the defendant knows the accuser, who reported being inappropriately touched and shown DVD pornography by Weed. Police believe the alleged assault took place approximately over the last year, according to the report.

Weed denied accusations of inappropriately touching and showing pornography to a child.

On Thursday, police seized six pornographic DVDs and Charleston Chew candy bars from dresser drawers in Weed’s bedroom, and a plastic Market Basket bag filled with children’s toys from the kitchen. Police also discovered stickers and a poster for a kids’ movie on a wall in Weed’s bedroom, the report states.

Priscilla Cregg, who lives across the street from Weed, said she has known Weed for around 30 years, since she moved to Second Street.

Cregg said she did not know about the accusations until Weed was arrested, but said if she did, she would have notified police.

“I would’ve never thought that he would do this to any children,” she said, expressing concern about the accusations.

It is unclear at this time whether there is more than one child involved in the alleged incidents.

Weed is being held on $5,000 cash bail, and is scheduled return to Lowell District Court on Aug. 19 for a probable-cause hearing.
