DRACUT — Residents are invited to a birthday celebration Saturday, Feb. 23, with a walk along the Proprietors’ Way trail near Four Oaks Country Club.

The walk commemorate the 318th anniversary of Dracut’s separation from the town of Chelmsford on Feb. 26, 1701.

Surnames familiar to 21st residents of Dracut and Chelmsford appear on the document petitioning “His Majesty’s” General Court, among them Varnum, Richardson and Coburn (also spelled Colburn or Colburne).

It would “be of considerable benefit to the Publick, and be a great strengthening of the Frontier parts by reason of the people which will be desirous to settle at said place when made a Township because of the convenient positionship thereof,” reads the petition.

The Open Space Committee is hosting the walk, which will begin at 10 a.m.

Walkers are asked to meet at the maintenance shed at the back of the Four Oaks Golf Course parking lot.

The hike will proceed east toward Brentwood Drive, where it will end. Refreshments will be served there.

Participants can walk back using the road or explore other trails in the area.

The Open Space Committee asks that walkers wear appropriate clothing and footwear.

Families are welcome, as are well-behaved dogs.
