DRACUT — The Dracut Middies executed some big plays and combined them with solid defense in defeating Westford Academy 39-7 at home last Friday evening.
Westford opened the scoring with a touchdown with 2:24 to go in the first quarter. Dracut had turned the ball over on downs at their own 47. Senior QB Cameron Barisano scrambled and found senior Tyler Blagg with a pass at the Dracut 11. On 4th-and-3, Barisano lofted a ball to left corner of the end zone, where senior Cameron Tierney jumped and hauled it in for 6 points. Barisano made it 7-0 with the kick.
To the delight of the hometown crowd, however, senior Nikhaya Carte returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown. He found daylight in the middle of the field and accelerated through the wedge, cheered loudly as he raced for the end zone.
Dracut would score on its next offensive play, After stopping Westford, the offense took over with 10:52 to go in the half. Junior Kuzi Mvududu took a hand-off, found some room and made the most of it, scampering 71 yards for a touchdown. Kyle Durkin made it 13-7 with the point after.
Westford was poised to get back in the game when senior Andrew Piedrahita blocked a punt and the offense drove the Dracut 8-yard-line. Dracut junior Joseph Petka intercepted a deflected ball in the end zone to end the drive.
The Middies began their last scoring drive of the half at the Westford 47. With 1:15 left, junior quarterback Cam McCullough managed the clock and went to the air, capping the drive with a touchdown pass to Nik Carter with 17 seconds left. Carter appeared to have been tackled but his knee hit a prone defender and he stayed off the turf, jumped up and made a determined run for the end zone. The halftime score was 20-7.
The second half was all Dracut.
The offense scored on its first possession The 69-yard drive was highlighted by consecutive gains of 20 and 15 yards by Mvududu, and finished with a 28-yard pass play from McCullough to sophomore Jacob Rivers.
Junior Devin Lambert helped set up the next score by blocking a punt deep in Westford territory. With a minute to go in the third, senior Dylan McCarthy broke free and ran 17 yards for a touchdown.
Durkin’s kick brought the score to 33-7, Dracut finished off the night with a drive with a ground attack led by quarterback Devin Lambert. Sophomore Lucas Ibarguen carried the ball the last 9 yards for a touchdown.
