The Dracut Girls 7th Grade Travel Basketball Team played 4 games in 4 days after a 2 week layoff and performed admirably against some tough teams in the Merrimack Conference. Following are the recaps of those games.
A rusty Dracut Girls 7th Grade Travel Basketball Team dropped a hard fought 43-36 match-up against a good passing Chelmsford squad. The long layoff between games definitely hampered the 5-1 Lady Middies’ play as they struggled early on against the Lions and their hard press. Dracut managed to make the game close before Chelmsford’s talented forward made 3 quick steals and lay-ups to put the Lions up 21-15 as the first half ended. The Lady Middies continued to labor in the second half despite making a few offensive runs to bring the score close, as Melissa Iannuzzo (8), Meghan Carney (7), Lindsey Emond (6), Emily Cloutier (6), Erin McMeniman (4) and Lilly King (2) scored points. Grabbing rebounds were Julianna Fagan (5), Julia Otoski (4), Olivia Pantano (4) and Erica Clark (3).
Careless ball handling, poor free throw shooting and multiple turnovers by Dracut led to a disappointing 44-36 loss to the Lady Grey Ghosts of Westford. The Lady Middies actually grabbed a quick 10-2 advantage before their wobbly passing led to easy points and allowed Westford to take the lead at the half 20-16. Dracut continued their tough grind in the second half but couldn’t overcome their sloppy play and some dubious foul calls. Getting on the scoreboard were Erin McMeniman (8), Lindsey Emond (8), Julia Otoski (5), Melissa Iannuzzo (4), Emily Cloutier (2), Olivia Pantano (2) and Lilly King (2). Meghan Carney (12 rebounds and 7 blocks) gave a strong defensive effort with Julianna Fagan pulling down two rebounds for the 5-2 Girls 7th Grade Travel Basketball Team. Dracut is looking forward to a rematch later this year.
No more excuses. Embarrassed by their two previous efforts, a determined Lady Middies team annihilated Andover 47-15 with their patented defensive swarming pressure.
