Lowell 27

The date had been circled on the calendar weeks ago. There might have been a Super Bowl scheduled that day, but the real big game would take place between the Dracut and Lowell 6th Grade Girls Travel basketball Teams. Dracut was determined to avenge an earlier two-point loss to the Red Raiders this season and came to play. Like a bunch of angry bees, the Lady Middies started the rematch with an 18-0 run as their defense buzzed all over the court. They held Lowell to no field goals and took a 23-8 lead going into halftime.

Centers Julianna Fagan (6) and Emily Cloutier (4) along with forward Olivia Pantano (6) collected rebounds, played outstanding defense and boxed out the talented front line of Lowell.

The hot outside shooting of Lindsey Emond (11 points) and Melissa Iannuzzo (8 points) opened up the driving lane for some superb play by Jaxy Marquez (10 points) as she took the ball to the hole. Lilly King added 3 points as Erin McMeniman, Kate Simpson and Julia Otoski played impressive trapping defense.

With just under a minute to go, the Dracut fans and players gave a rousing reception as an injured Meghan Carney made her first appearance on the court this year.

“Is Mise Coimeádaí Mo Dheirféar” (I am my sister’s keeper) has been their motto

and the 15-5 Lady Middies showed today that their team will be a force once the playoff season begins.
