The Dracut Girls Sixth Grade Travel Basketball Team picked up its 13th win of the season with a sound 39-35 victory over Peabody. The Lady Middies knew they were in a fight early against this one-loss squad as the half ended with Dracut up 18-17. Dracut picked up the defensive pressure after the break and did a better job guarding the Tanners’ outside shooting threats. The girls increased their lead to 10 with six minutes remaining and held off a comeback with three-point attempts by Peabody. Jaxy Marquez was hot from the line and the field and paced the team with 17 points. Lindsey Emond (9), Melissa Iannuzzo (5), Julia Otoski (3), Emily Cloutier (3) and Olivia Pantano (2) also scored. Julianna Fagan had three blocks against her taller opponent with Erin McMeniman (2) and Lilly King making steals. Kate Simpson hounded Peabody’s guards throughout the game.
Jaxy Marquez (11 points) hit two clutch free throws with 15 seconds remaining to lift the Dracut Girls Sixth Grade Travel Basketball Team past Stoneham 28-26 in a nail-biting contest. Just 30 seconds earlier, Lindsey Emond’s free throw tied the game at 26-26 after the Lady Middies stormed back from a six-point deficit in the last three minutes. Dracut struggled with the Lady Spartans’ height advantage and superior rebounding skills throughout the game, but their never-quit attitude and hustling defense kept them within striking distance for this exciting comeback win. Also scoring for the Lady Middies were Melissa Iannuzzo (6), Emily Cloutier (4), Erin McMeniman (3) and Julianna Fagan (2). Olivia Pantano (two rebounds) and Lilly King (steal) contributed on the defensive end. Kate Simpson and Julia Otoski played well while guarding Stoneham’s fine guard jump shooters. The victory extends Dracut’s win streak to three as they improve to 14-5.
