North Andover 39
Even with a 39-25 win, an undefeated North Andover squad had their hands full against the Dracut girls sixth grade travel basketball team. The Lady Middies battled this much taller team right to the end and put a scare into the first-place River Valley League team.
Dracut fell behind by eight at the break as the good passing of the Lady Knights put them up 17-9. Dracut made a run to start the second half but North Andover’s outstanding rebounding and domination in the paint allowed them to pull away.
Scoring for Dracut were Melissa Iannuzzo (9), Lindsey Emond (9), Julia Otoski (4), Olivia Pantano (2) and Erin McMeniman (1). Lilly King (4), Emily Cloutier (3) and Julianna Fagan (2) collected rebounds with Kate Simpson trying to create turnovers on defense.
In their game against Westford, the girls avenged an earlier loss by picking up a disciplined 26-12 victory. Both teams came out tentative at the start as the Lady Middies adjusted to the slow deliberate play of Westford and led 10-8 at the break. Dracut stepped up its trademark defensive pressure and held the Grey Ghosts scoreless for the first eight minutes of the second half and increased its lead behind the excellent play of guard Jaxy Marquez (13 points). Lindsey Emond (6), Erin McMeniman (2), Emily Cloutier (2), Melissa Iannuzzo (2) and Julia Otoski (1) also tallied. Julianna Fagan (4) and Lilly King (2) pulled down rebounds with Olivia Pantano and Kate Simpson collecting steals. The win improves Dracut’s record to 12-5 this season.
