The Dracut Dirtdogs’ 12-year-old squad recently competed in the Cal Ripken state tourney in Duxbury, bouncing back from an opening loss to go all the way to finals, where they lost to a powerhouse Duxbury squad.

Dracut lost its first game against Marshfield on the first day of the tournament. They then bounced back in game two by defeating Riverside Bradford behind a solid pitching performance by Thomas Crowley.

This put them into the position of having to face the same Marshfield team. Dracut played flawless defense and received outstanding pitching from lefty Derek Theriault (2 hits, one walk and 8 strikeouts), in a10-0 win.

This sent Dracut into the championship bracket against powerhouse Duxbury. Trailing 6-4 in the last inning, Dracut rallied for two runs to tie the game. Duxbury’s leadoff hitter homered on a 3-2 pitch to give them a the walkoff victory. Dracut’s offense was led by Thomas Crowley, who had three home runs and 8 RBI for the tournament.

Dracut will now compete in the Cal Ripken New England Regional Tournament beginning July 22 in Dover, N.H.
