The Northeast Lady Thunder AAU basketball teams started their season off with a great showing at the Connecticut Northstars Girls Spring Classic Tournament, finishing with an overall record of 14-2.
The Thunder teams are comprised of girls from the Merrimack Valley and Southern New Hampshire, with a majority of the players from Dracut.
The 5th- and 6th-grade teams finished undefeated and won championships in their divisions. Both 8th-grade teams went 3-1 and won their tournaments against the top AAU teams from around the southern New England area in this competitive tourney.
The 6th-grade team won the tournament by finishing 4-0 and rolling over their opponents by a combined score of 180-91. Guards Hailey Noel, Maddy Bello and Nicole Teague had multiple baskets on a variety of layups, as forwards Autumn Ceppi, Amanda Bishop and Jenna Frasier scored inside. Center Onotse Omoyeni was a force pulling down rebounds with reserves Lindsey Emond, Jaxy Marquez and Meghan Carney making several key contributions throughout the championship run.
The 5th-grade girls started off strong early as they pounded the Windsor Warriors 27-6 behind Jaxy Marquez’s 13 points and excellent rebounding by Julianna Fagan. The girls continued their winning ways with a 27-11 triumph over the Danbury Mavericks, as Melissa Ianuzzo scored 9 points and Julia Otoski had several steals.
Lindsey Emond’s 10 points and strong board work by Emily Cloutier improved their record to 3-0 in a 37-8 thrashing of the New Haven Northstars. The championship game saw the Thunder trailing a tough physical Hartford Wildcat squad 13-12 at the half. The action went back and forth to the end as the Thunder clinched the crown with a 34-30 victory behind Meghan Carney’s 11 second-half points. Lilly King and Molly Jones’ aggressive defense helped slow down the Wildcats tremendous guard play in this exciting battle.
