PELHAM — This is the month to learn about bears during story times at the Pelham Public Library.

Children who attend story times at the library this week will learn about polar bears. Children’s librarian Debbie Laffond will talk about polar bear habits and habitats and investigate how they stay warm with an interesting experiment.

Fine-free month: November has been designted “fine-free month.” All fines will be removed for items returned to the library during November. Library patrons are encouraged to “pay” their overdue fines by donating nonperishable food items that will be given to the Pelham Food Pantry. Library director Sue Hoadley said the fine-free month is good for patrons and good for the library. “Basically, all we want is our books back. It’s much more important to have the books back in circulation for other patrons to enjoy than to collect the fine money,” she explained. “Any overdue materials returned during the month of November will have all fines removed from the borrower’s account.”

Books, magazines, audiobooks and instructional videos can be checked out for two-week intervals. A fine of 10 cents a day is charged for overdue materials. Some books are overdue for months and years. Others are gone forever, Hoadley said.

Replacement costs for lost or damaged items are not included.
