The New England Hawks had a successful start to their first New England Football League season with a 35-0 victory over the Weymouth Sharks on July 21 at Weymouth High School. The Hawks, the result of a franchise merger between the semipro NEFL Merrimack Valley Crush and Seacoast Hawks, were powered by quarterback Derek Vater’s four touchdown passes. Vater, of Haverhill, finished 8-for-12 for 255 yards.

Dave Crutchfield of Acton ran for 102 yards on 16 carries. Mike Isola of Nashua, N.H., added 68 on 10 carries.

Linebacker Mike Zabelski of Ipswich led the defense with one interception and five tackles.

The Hawks compete in the Suburban Division of the NEFL’s AAA Colonial Conference. The next game for the Hawks is July 28 at 7 p.m. against the Wildcats in Worcester. The Hawks then return to Haverhill Stadium for their home opener on Aug. 4 against the Middleboro Cobras at 7 p.m.
