PEPPERELL — The basketball season is heating up in town along with the July weather.
As the nights turn warmer, basketball competition is getting into full swing. But instead of the hardwood the players will be running on the blacktop at Town Field as the Pepperell Men's Summer League gets rolling.
While all the men that will play in this league have graduated from high school, the amount of talent and competition will still be interesting to watch.
"Yeah there's some solid players in this league, a lot of NCAA level guys. D3 guys especially," said one league player who preferred not to be named. "It keeps the league competitive and fun. It will be interesting to see what this summer brings out in these squads."
While the competition will feature a gauntlet of tough hoopsters, there remains a known goal among the players of what they're trying to do.
"I'm trying to get buckets and have fun," said the player. "We mostly compete in this league to stay sharp for other things ,whether to stay in shape or for the guys competing in college. So if we all go at each other at our fullest we should all be able to accomplish our goals for this summer whatever they may be."
It's obvious that this league is a fun time just watching it. With the sunset beaming down and then moonlight soon following, as well as some great outside shots and high flying dunks, and with the aggressive defense that street ball always brings, it's a fun outing for any hoops fan.
Of course in any league you want to win the title and that is still a hope here. "Yeah we all want the title, we'll compete hard to get it."
The Pepperell Men's Summer League holds games on Tuesday and Thursday nights, with several games per night starting at either 6:15 or 7 p.m. As of this writing Panda Wok, Bailey's/Mariano's and LF Robbins appear to be the class of the circuit.
