The Chelmsford High field hockey team ran into a buzzsaw Wednesday night.

Second-seeded Masconomet ran out to a 3-0 halftime lead and captured a 4-1 win over the Lions during a Division 1 North semifinal in Reading.

Trailing 3-1, Chelmsford got on the board with 2:42 left on a goal by Sophia Piper.

Piper's goal was set up by Shannon Walsh for the 11th-seeded Lions (14-6-1). Chelmsford had advanced by defeating Central, 5-1, and Lexington, 2-1, in OT.

Acton-Boxboro 0

Neither team could score in regulation or either of the two overtimes.

When the battle of Dual County Leagues went to penalty kicks, No. 3 Lincoln-Sudbury (16-2-1) came out on top, ending a magical run for 15th-seeded Acton-Boxboro (9-8-4).

A-B advanced by besting Chelsea, 2-1, and Medford, 4-0.

Bishop Fenwick 1

Austin Prep 0

The top-seeded Cougars were ousted when Bishop Fenwick scored with 15 minutes left in the second half.

It was only the third loss of the season for Austin Prep (18-3). Fourth-seeded Fenwick advances with a 17-3-1 record.

Mystic Valley 1

The second-seeded Cougars moved on with a four-set victory.


Third-seeded Mystic Valley (17-4) won the first set, 25-19. Austin Prep rallied to win the next two, 25-20 and 25-18. In the fourth set, Austin (19-3) trailed 23-21 before rallying to win the next four points and the match, 25-23.

Austin will play Ipswich for the North title. The match will be held Saturday at Tewksbury High, time to be announced.
