Boston College football coach Steve Addazio announced on Monday that junior linebacker Tim Joy of Chelmsford will miss the season with a knee injury.
Joy suffered the injury in Boston College's final preseason scrimmage. The Eagles open their 2014 season on Saturday against UMass at Gillette Stadium.
"Your heart goes out to Tim," said Addazio. "It's a tough thing to see. He prepared a lot and put a lot into working for the season."
Joy, co-MVP of the Merrimack Valley Conference and a Sun Player of the Year as a Chelmsford High senior in 2011, appeared in nine games as a BC freshman for former Eagles coach Frank Spaziani. That season he played 198 snaps at linebacker, registering 13 tackles.
Last season the 6-foot-1, 229-pound Joy saw action in six games on special teams. He was expected to see considerable playing time this season backing up projected starting linebackers Steven Daniels, Josh Keyes and Sean Duggan.
Addazio said Joy's was the only serious injury during the Eagles' preseason camp.
