Lowell Post 87 fell behind 3-0 to Ashland in the first inning and never caught up, losing 11-7 in its opener in the American Legion Zone 5 playoffs.

Area baseball

After Lowell got within 5-4 in the fifth inning, Ashland put the game away with six runs over the final two innings at Stoklosa/Alumni Field.

Lowell fell into the losers' bracket of the double-elimination tournament. Lowell will play Watertown in an elimination game on Monday at 7 p.m. at Alumni Field.

Tyler Schermerhorn pitched 6.2 innings for Lowell, and also went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Also having good nights with the bat were Joe Parisi (2-for-4, 1 run, 1 RBI), Conor Callery (2-for-4, 1 run, 2 RBI), Ryan McKennedy (1 hit, 1 run, 1 RBI) and Keagan Latta (2-for-3, 2 runs, 1 RBI).

SUBURBAN PONY LEAGUE

13 Division

Lowell sweeps

Lowell improved to 11-4 after sweeping Wilmington, 13-7, and 15-4.

In game one, Brian Callery (5 K's) pitched 5 innings to earn the win and John Donovan (3 K's) pitched 2 innings in relief.

Offensively, Josh Gath and Justin Villanueva each had a hit and 2 RBI. Aidan Foyle (RBI) and Shivi Patel (RBI) both went 2-for-2 at the plate. Thomas Hassett and Bryan Snow also had a hit and RBI for Lowell.

In the second game, Hassett pitched all 5 innings of the mercy-rule shortened contest.

Foyle continued where he left off by going 3-for-3 with 3 RBI. Donovan chipped in with 2 hits and 2 RBI. Not to be outdone, Edgar Velazquez had 3 doubles, while Villanueva (RBI) and Jake Donohue had 2 hits apiece.

Yandel Tineo, Hassett, Brett Lepoer and Connor Lagasse also had hits for Lowell.

14-15 Division

Chelmsford 2

Reading 1

Chelmsford (10-5) was led by Ben Jordan, who allowed 1 run while striking out 6 in 6 innings.

Josh Roberge picked up the save. Eric Wrobel had 2 hits for the victors and Jon Barry was steller defensively at shortstop for Chelmsford in the narrow victory.

Dracut splits

Dracut split a doubleheader with Lawrence, winning the first game, 5-3, and dropping the nightcap, 8-1.

In the first game, Roscoe Martin threw a complete game, allowing only 1 earned run. He also went 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI. Harris Varnum (2-for-3) drove in two with a two-out single in the third, and Jasper Gucciardi put Dracut ahead to stay in the fourth with a two-out single.

Dracut is now 11-5.

NORTHEAST LEAGUE

Lowell Catholic 3

Chelmsford 1

The game was scoreless up until the top of the fifth inning when Chelmsford took the lead 1-0.

The lead didn't last long as Lowell Catholic's Chris Klangos drove in Kyle Rafferty with a double, tying the game 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth. Lowell Catholic scored two more runs in the sixth inning thanks to Harris Varnum's two-out, two-RBI single.

Kyle Rafferty was a force on the mound, pitching a complete game and allowing only 1 run on 4 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 3. Andy Marchand played excellent defense in right field.
