Savanna Coutu went 4-for-4 as Greater Lowell Tech edged arch-rival Shawsheen Tech, 3-2, in a Division 3 North Sectional preliminary round softball game.

Elsewhere in Division 3 North, Notre Dame Academy beat North Shore, 7-4.

Carly Scarano went the distance on the mound, striking out 3 to earn the win for the Lancers, and she helped her own cause offensively with 3 hits, including a triple and 1 RBI.

Regan Szeckley added 2 hits with a triple and 2 runs scored for Notre Dame Academy (11-10).

NDA will play the winner of Sunday's Amesbury/Weston in the a quarterfinal game Tuesday at 4 p.m. at a site to be determined.

Meghan Sullivan struck out seven and scattered 8 hits as No. 16 seeded Greater Lowell won this preliminary round game over a familiar foe.

Greater Lowell (9-8) advances to a first-round game at No. 1 seed Brighton on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Jamie Ray hit 3 triples for No. 17 Shawsheen Tech, which finishes 9-10. Danielle Cacciola went 2-for-2 with 2 runs scored.


Shawsheen's Kennedy Harper, who sustained broken and fractured bones in her face during a game last week the result of a fly ball that hit her in the face, returned to the lineup as the DP Saturday.

Allison Moylan pitched a 2-hitter and also contributed 2 hits and 2 RBI as No. 10 seed Lowell Catholic downed No. 7 Winthrop in this first-round game.

Lowell Catholic (13-8) advances to a quarterfinal on Tuesday versus the winner of Sunday's Austin Prep at Mt. Alvernia first-round game.

Moylan walked one and struck out six over seven innings. Winthrop's run was unearned.

Kaitlin Carbonneau went 3-for-4 with an RBI for Lowell Catholic. Andrea Cirvizzi went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI. Shortstop Maddie Medina played an outstanding game defensively.

Grafton, the defending Division 2 state champion, broke open a close game with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Brooke Bogacz pitched a strong game for Tyngsboro. Bogacz notched 4 strikeouts and only allowed 1 walk.


Masconomet 4

Wilmington 1

Senior righty Mike Curtis pitched well for Wilmington, allowing 5 hits while striking out 8 in 6 innings.

Masconomet (19-2) scored 3 runs in the second inning and added a run in the sixth inning.

Jimmy Davey paced Wilmington's offense with 2 hits, including a double. Curtis and Corey Stillings had 1 hit each for Wilmington (14-8).
