WORCESTER -- Senior Stephanie Okpoebo of Chelmsford, a member of the Holy Cross women's track and field team, has been selected as the 2014 winner of the John A. Meegan Athletic Achievement Award.
Presented by the Holy Cross Varsity Club, the Meegan Award goes to a student-athlete who competed in a sport other than football, baseball and basketball, and who attained outstanding achievement during his or her college career. This award is given by the club in memory of the late John A. Meegan (Class of 1939), esteemed treasurer of the Varsity Club from 1988 to 1996.
A team captain as a senior, Okpoebo is the school record-holder in the 55-meter dash (7.14), 60-meter dash (7.49), 100-meter dash (11.76), 200-meter dash (24.19) and 300-meter dash (40.52).
She has also been a part of the school record-setting 4x100 meter (46.98) and the 4x200 meter (1:42.24) relay teams.
Okpoebo has been named the Athlete of the Meet at both the 2013 Patriot League outdoor championship and the 2014 Patriot League indoor championship, while being a three-time first team All-Patriot League and All-New England selection in both indoor and outdoor track.
She was the Patriot League outdoor champion in the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash as a freshman, sophomore and junior, while winning the Patriot League indoor championship in the 60-meter dash as a sophomore, junior and senior, and the 200-meter dash as a freshman, sophomore and senior.
Away from the track, Okpoebo volunteers with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Mass. and has been a Freshman Orientation leader. She has also been a member of the Holy Cross Leadership Academy and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
Okpoebo will be presented with the Meegan Award at the 59th annual Holy Cross Varsity Club Hall of Fame Dinner & Ceremonial Banquet, to be held on Saturday, May 3, at the Hogan Campus Center.
