Akashian, the nephew of incoming city manager Kevin Murphy, said his resignation was submitted Thursday and will be effective April 18.
Akashian, who works in Murphy's Chelmsford law office, said he decided to step down because he will be run the law office with Murphy taking over as city manager.
"I'm going to be doing more with the law practice, so it is time to move on," Akashian said.
