LOWELL -- The annual Lowell Spinners/IAABO 95 Holiday Basketball Tournament will get its four-day run under way Friday afternoon with the first of four games at Lowell Catholic High School's Keith Gymnasium.

All games in the tournament this year will be played at the Stevens Street facility. The event is split into Large School and Small School divisions.

Opening day sees Chelmsford squaring off with Londonderry in the Large School tournament lid-lifter at 3:15 p.m., followed by Dracut vs. Pelham (approximately 5 p.m.), Haverhill vs. Acton-Boxboro (6:45) and Lowell taking on Westford Academy in the night's finale (8:30).

Two Large School consolation games will be played Saturday afternoon, followed by two Small School semifinals: Greater Lowell vs. Tyngsboro at 6:15 p.m. and Lowell Catholic vs. Pentucket Regional at 8.

On Sunday, the Small School championship game is at 2:45 while the Large School semifinals are set for 6:15 and 8 p.m. On Monday, three Large School consolation games will precede the championship tip-off at 8:15 p.m.

The annual George Bossi Lowell Holiday Wrestling Tournament will be held this Sunday and Monday at the LHS Abraham Gymnasium.

The top wrestling schools from around the region annually gather for this early-season showdown that more often than not identifies the true contenders for the state tournaments later in the season.

Wrestling gets under way at 9 a.m. on Sunday and continues throughout the day, with later rounds and the championship matches Monday.

Many other local schools will compete in holiday tournaments this weekend in basketball and hockey.

Among them, the K of C Tournament at Tewksbury High will see the Littleton High boys basketball team taking on Wilmington at 5:30 on Friday, immediately followed by the Tewksbury-Shawsheen Tech game.

The consolation (5:30) and championship (7:00) games are Saturday.
