SOUTH HADLEY -- The 2013 Longstreth/NFHCA Division III All-Region field hockey teams have been announced and a local resident has been honored.
Mount Holyoke College freshman Liz DiCesare earned a nod on the second team.
DiCesare, a goaltender out of Westford, concluded her rookie season with an 18-3 record. In addition to a 1.14 goals against average, she boasted a .841 save percentage as a starter in all 21 games. She recorded 111 saves on the season and allowed just 21 goals in 1289:53 minutes of action. The NEWMAC Rookie of the Year and a Second Team honoree, she led the conference in several categories, including wins and save percentage.
A former standout at Bishop Guertin High School, DiCesare was also second in the NEWMAC in goals against average and saves.
LOWELL -- Ben Pare, a senior from Methuen, and Lucas Parsons, a sophomore from Methuen, were named to the 2013 America East Conference Cross Country All-Academic Team.
To be eligible, student-athletes (sophomores and older) must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 and be a significant contributor on his/her team.
A biology major, Pare has maintained a 3.953, and earned a 4.0 for the spring 2013 term. Parsons is an exercise physiology major with a 3.787 GPA.
WESTFIELD -- Senior Rob Ruggiero of Bridgewater State was named the MASCAC's Defensive Player of the Year in football.
Ruggiero, a native of Acton, is a senior defensive lineman. He was also a first-team defense selection.
Three other local standouts were also honored
UMass Dartmouth sophomore linebacker Derek Tarpey, a native of Tewksbury, was a first-team defensive selection.
Massachusetts Maritime senior offensive tackle John Moriarty, a native of Wilmington, was chosen to the first team offense. Picked as a member of the second team offense was Wayne McGillicuddy of Lowell.
He is a junior center at Westfield State.
LEWISTON, Maine -- Former Billerica High star quarterback Nick LaSpada played in six games this season as a freshman at Bates College.
LaSpada completed 23 of 39 passes for 266 yards and one touchdown. He rushed 33 times for 82 yards and two touchdowns. The Bobcats finished 4-4.
