What department stores do you remember in downtown Lowell?
One of the most memorable stores downtown was the Bon Marché department store, which opened on Merrimack Street in 1878 by Lowell native Frederic Mitchell. The store remained open for decades and billed itself as the largest department store in New England. The Bon Marché offered it all, six floors of shopping where one could find all their wares. The Bon Marché store closed its doors at 5:30 p.m. on January 10, 1976, and its space was filled by Jordan Marsh until the early '90s. On the right is a 1908 photo of Merrimack Street looking east.
