LOWELL -- Road races. Parades. Concerts. Even some showers.

The region will be alive with Independence Day activities, beginning tonight in Wilmington and lasting throughout the weekend.

But don't expect to use many sparklers. The forecast calls for a 60 percent chance of showers July 4, with a high of 79 degrees.

There's a 30 percent chance of showers Friday night, with a low of 60. But forecasts have been wrong before.

Here's what's happening in many Greater Lowell communities:

* Acton, July 4: Fireworks and other events at NARA Park, 25 Ledgerock Way, from 3-10 p.m.

* Ayer, July 5: Parade from West Main Street to Pirone Park, 3 p.m., and fireworks at 9:30 p.m. Pirone Park, 17 School St. Rain date is July 6. Live music and a bike decoration contest. Admission is free.

* Billerica: Family Friendly July 4, at Town Common, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

* Burlington, July 4: Kids games, dog show and more, at Center St., 8:30 a.m. Parade starting at 11 a.m. on Cambridge St., going down Winn Street and ending at Memorial Elementary School. Admission is free. Cambridge and Winn streets will be shut down at 10 a.m.

* Chelmsford, July 4: Parade from McCarthy School to Chelmsford Center, 10 a.m. to noon. Festivities from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

* Concord, July 4: Picnic in the park at Emerson Field, 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Face-painting, live music and a one-man circus performer.

* Dracut, July 3: Concert at Dracut High School Complex, 1540 Lakeview Ave.


, 7-9 p.m. Rain date is Aug. 28. Fireworks to follow.

Parking and admission is free.

* Groton, July 7: Fireworks begin at sundown. Festivities at the town field behind the public library, 6 p.m. Rain date is July 8. Admission is free.

* Littleton, July 4: Historical Society picnic at Fay Park, 11 a.m.

* Lowell, July 4: Fireworks at LeLacheur Park, 450 Aiken St., 7 p.m. Rain date is July 5. Admission to the stadium will be free, and the city is also providing free parking at the George Ayotte Garage, 11 Post Office Square. Additional parking will be at UMass Lowell's stadium lot for $6 per vehicle. Limited on-street parking near LeLacheur Park will also be available.

* Nashua, July 4: Children's field day at Holman Stadium, 67 Amherst St., 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Fireworks at dusk.

Rain date for fireworks only is July 5. Admission is free.

* Wilmington, July 2: Festivities include Wiffle Ball, a blueberry-pie-eating contest and musical chairs at Town Common, 6-9 p.m.

July 3: Carnival at Aleppo Shriners, 99 Forham Road, 6-11 p.m.

July 4: Opening ceremonies at Town Commons, 9:15 a.m. Carnival at Aleppo Shriners, noon to 11 p.m.

July 5: Carnival at Aleppo Shriners, noon to 11 p.m. Opening ceremonies start at 7:30 p.m. Fireworks at 9:30 p.m. Rain date is July 6.
