ATHOL -- State police are investigating a fatal four-car crash on Route 2 in Athol Thursday afternoon.

A 25-year-old Shirley woman driving a 2013 Hyundai Accent allegedly struck two vehicles when trying to pass cars in the breakdown lane around 3 p.m. Thursday, according to a statement from the Massachusetts State Police.

The second vehicle she struck, a 2010 Toyota Prius, crossed over into the westbound lane of Route 2 as a result of the impact and was then struck head-on by a tractor-trailer.

A passenger in the Prius, 68-year-old Carole Lawton, of Arlington, died from her injuries. The driver of the Prius, a 67-year-old Arlington man, was transported to Athol Memorial Hospital and later UMass Memorial Hospital with serious injuries.

No charges have been filed yet in the crash, which is under investigation by state police.
