LOWELL -- Young women will bring barbershop music to life at the 2014 Rising Star Quartet Competition on Saturday, Aug. 2, at 3 p.m., at Lowell Memorial Auditorium.

The annual barbershop contest offers girls, aged 25 years and younger, a chance to present their a cappella talents by competing among thirteen Rising Star quartets from Arizona, California, Connecticut, Maryland, Kansas, Ohio, Texas, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island. The Young Singers Foundation awards cash prizes of $2,000, $1,000 and $500 for first, second and third place winners.

Prior to the competition, all participants will have the opportunity to sing in a chorus coached by top educators. Those choruses will perform at the end of the Rising Star Quartet Competition. The 2014 Rising Star Quartet Competition and Conference is being hosted by the North Atlantic Region of Sweet Adelines and Sweet Adelines International.
