Ben Taylor is the son of James Taylor and Carly Simon, but he's carved his own path in music and it will lead to Boarding House Park in Lowell this summer as part of the Lowell Summer Music Series.
He'll come to Lowell on Friday, Aug. 15, at 7:30 p.m., to headline a fun triple bill with Massachusetts acts Heather Maloney and Adam Ezra. Each act will perform one set each. All three sets will be acoustic.
Let's start with Taylor, who will headline. He's touring ostensibly behind his 2012 album Listening, his first album in four years and a collection of music that blends folk, pop, soul, urban, reggae and country.
While you would think, given his pedigree of two of the greatest singer-songwriters of all time, he's been playing music his whole life, he actually didn't start singing until his early 20s, or about 15 years ago for the 37-year-old Taylor.
Although he's run hot and cold with both of his parents (he told Howard Stern in a 2002 interview that he usually spent two weeks with Simon and one week with his father on a rotating basis as a child), he has toured with James Taylor. In that interview with Stern, Taylor also talked about meeting everyone from Diane Sawyer to First Lady Nancy Reagan, the Clintons and Mia Farrow. He also said that he couldn't say who "You're So Vain" is about.
He's dabbled in acting, having worked on American Dreams, and his cover of Macy Gray's "I Try" was in a Honey Nut Cheerios TV commercial in Canada about five years ago.
Maloney's collaboration with Massachusetts-based indie folk quartet Darlingside, the Woodstock EP, earned a New York Times feature for their cover of Joni Mitchell's classic song, "Woodstock." She's touring behind that EP while working on her next full-length album.
Ezra, who usually works with the Adam Ezra Group, is performing a rare solo show.
Ben Taylor, Heather Maloney and Adam Ezra will perform at Boarding House Park in Lowell on Friday, Aug. 15, at 7:30 p.m., as part of the Lowell Summer Music Series. Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 day of the show and can be purchased at lowellsummermusic.org.
