PELHAM, N.H. -- A 17-year-old Dracut boy escaped injury when his car drifted off Bridge Street and snapped a utility pole in half after he glanced down to adjust his radio, according to police.

Corey Galloway, 17, of Dracut, told police he was driving his Oldsmobile Bravado southbound when he glanced down to adjust his radio and then looked up just as his vehicle left the roadway and slammed into a utility pole.

Police said the pole snapped in half, forcing an 11-hour closure of that part of Bridge Street while the pole was cleaned up and replaced. Traffic was diverted through a residential neighborhood while repairs were made.

Police said Galloway was shaken up even though he didn't suffer physical injuries, so he was taken to Lowell General Hospital where he was evaluated and released.

Police said distracted driving appears to be the cause of the crash and that alcohol and drugs were not involved. Galloway was not cited.
