Why am I voting against the $2.9 million override in Dracut?
It's too much. Town residents are already paying additional taxes as a result of the debt exclusions for the new library and police station. Soon, additional new taxes for the high-school renovation debt exclusion will be hitting every taxpayer's bill. Burdening property owners with even more new taxes right now is too much all at once.
It's a bad way to do business. There's an established budget process that should be followed to get more school funding. Plus, an override should never be done for operating expenses. Like every family in town during these tough economic times, the School Department must live within its budget.
Unlike a debt exclusion, an override never goes away. This additional tax increase will stay on our property tax bills forever.
Please, support responsible spending and protect taxpayers. Vote "no" on September 9.
