Selectmen last week granted a special permit for a recreational-marijuana dispensary to operate at 76 Pleasant St. -- a first for the town. Officials on a 5-0 vote essentially gave the green-light for GreenStar Herbals to move forward. The company is owned by Boxboro resident Tom E. Morey.

GreenStar Herbals is self-funded and has an exclusive distribution agreement with Sanctuary Medicinals, a medical-marijuana company. Morey said he hopes to have the business open sometime in the late fall of this year and maybe sooner.

"We're waiting for state approval, and that's in process as we speak," Morey added. "We're going to run it professionally. It's going be secure. It's going to be a safe environment, and it's going to be successful."

Officials also unanimously approved a host community agreement with GreenStar Herbals.

"GreenStar will be engaged in the community and support the local community," Town Manager Jim Duggan said. "We're looking forward to their partnership going forward."

With a special permit now secured, Morey said it's his company's intention to hire as many Dracut residents as possible.
