Last fall, Tyler Bassett was assigned to recreate a famous piece of art for an elective course at Husson University in Bangor, Maine.

The Dracut High School graduate chose to model his class project after Pablo Picasso's "Girl before a Mirror," which shows the late Spanish painter's young mistress, Marie-Therese Walter, looking at her reflection in a mirror. The painting features bold colors and shapes making up the woman in Picasso's iconic Cubist style.

"I chose that one because I liked all the depth of color and design work in that piece," said Bassett, 21. "I really liked the way Picasso worked. I really like the use of his colors."

It took him about 2 1/2 hours, and once completed, Bassett titled it "After Picasso's Girl and Mirror." To his shock, a jury recently chose his piece as "Best in Show" in the mixed-media category. "After Picasso's Girl and Mirror" is being showcased along with other pieces of work at a student art exhibition in the Robert E. White Gallery on Husson University's Bangor campus.

"It was pretty shocking, honestly," Bassett said. "I was pretty ecstatic. It was pretty exciting."

Bassett, a junior majoring in marketing communications, recreated the Picasso masterpiece mostly with construction paper. He cut out every one of the little shapes that make up the collage, and also used some marker.

"This show will hang through graduation and the summer, so prospective students and parents can enjoy it," Kathi J. Smith, the Robert E.

White Gallery coordinator and an assistant professor of art at Husson, said in a written statement. "The artworks chosen for this show are initially submitted by instructors in arts-based courses here at Husson. They are clear demonstrations of the technical quality and creative excellence students bring to their assignments and projects."

Bassett said he has realized throughout college and this process that he wants to use his creative side in whatever job he ends up doing.
