DRACUT -- The Dracut Council on Aging is hosting its first annual Wonderful Wreath Weekend, a fundraiser that will benefit The Friends of the Dracut Elderly Inc., a nonprofit organization that supports the senior center.
The Wonderful Wreath Weekend runs Friday through Sunday at the Dracut COA located at 951 Mammoth Rd., Dracut. Friday's event hours are 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday's hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday's hours are 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Those interested in a chance at winning a wreath can purchase raffle tickets, with proceeds going to The Friends of the Dracut Elderly.
"We're really hoping to make this an annual event," said Dracut COA Director Bethany Loveless. "There is no wiggle room in our budget for new equipment, and so without fundraisers like these and the efforts of The Friends, we would be quite in a pickle. Our senior center equipment would deteriorate with no real way to correct that."
A sheet of 20 raffle tickets costs $10 and additional sheets are $5.
According to Loveless, money raised from the upcoming Wonderful Wreath Weekend will help with the purchase of new dining room chairs in the senior center. The current chairs, she said, are worn out, stained and don't have arms, making it difficult for some seniors to get up.
Over a year ago, The Friends of the Dracut Elderly gifted three televisions, a DVD player, and sound system, to the senior center, which collectively ended an era of old school bingo.
About half a dozen wreaths have already been donated by businesses such as the Jean D'Arc Credit Union, Enterprise Bank, and a few assisted living facilities. Loveless is keeping them in her office for now until they're all ready to be displayed in the center's art room, the library and half of the dining hall.
On Saturday at the senior center there will also be an opportunity to pose with Santa during a breakfast. Tickets for the breakfast are $15 for adults (which includes a sheet of 20 wreath raffle tickets) and $5 for children ages 3 to 12. Children under 3 will have free admission.
