DRACUT -- The Police Department reorganization will be discussed at a Public Safety Subcommittee meeting Tuesday.

Lt. Stephen Chaput was named provisional deputy chief, part of Town Manager Jim Duggan's reorganization of command structure. Duggan in a March 13 memo said Chaput is "thorough, respectful and efficient in his duties."

"The subcommittee will probably have a little more conversation to understand in better depth the thinking behind the restructuring (of the Police Department)," Duggan said Friday.

Duggan has said he created the second deputy position to spread workload and ensure the police chief has a proper chain of command.

Duggan also added two sergeant positions. He said he will interview candidates from a Civil Service list this week, and make selections next week.

Selectman Joseph DiRocco Jr. said his main question for Tuesday's meeting involves making sure the police and fire departments are sharing resources effectively.

DiRocco has objected to the timing of the reorganization because the town is hiring a new police chief.

Selectman Tami Dristiliaris could not be reached for comment.

Selectman Jesse Forcier said Chaput is a wonderful choice for provisional deputy chief.

"I know Steve a little bit and I think he's the perfect guy for it," he said. "Something will be good to split that workload into two different directions."

The meeting begins at 5 p.m.
