DRACUT -- Students at Greenmont Avenue Elementary School were recently treated to an assembly presented by Kate Middlemiss and the Joseph Middlemiss Big Heart Foundation with a message of "Be Kind!"

On Sept. 23, 2013, Middlemiss' son, Joseph Scott Middlemiss, died at the age of 6 from cardiomyopathy. Middlemiss and her husband, Scott, created the Joseph Middlemiss Big Heart Foundation to honor their son by continuing the kindness and love that Joey showed to everyone.

Kate Middlemiss now expands "The Joseph Middlemiss All You Need is Love Mission" by educating children on the power of kindness. Students and staff at Greenmont were inspired and moved by the songs, speech and book she shared.

At the conclusion of her talk, Middlemiss presented the school with an 8-foot-long "Buddy Bench" and dedicated it to former Greenmont Principal Michael McNamara, who was in attendance.

A Buddy Bench is a place where students can go when they're feeling lonely, are looking for a new friend or need a "buddy." Students know that when they see a child sitting on the Buddy Bench, they should show their kindness by approaching the student and inviting him or her to play.

McNamara is an active member of the community and School Committee. The Joseph Middlemiss Big Heart Foundation dedicated the bench to him for his continuing service, loyalty and kindness to the children of the Dracut Public Schools.
