BILLERICA -- A lost beagle turned in to Billerica Animal Control on Monday was reunited with its owner Wednesday, and it turns out the wayward 9-month-old pooch traveled about 50 miles from where he ran away from his owners.
Animal Control Officer Maureen Ray said the beagle was turned in by a man who picked it up on Route 3 in Billerica on Monday, thinking the pooch had likely been abandoned.
Ray posted a photograph of the dog on the Billerica Animal Control Twitter page, but got no responses. On Wednesday morning, Ray shared the dog's photo on the Facebook page of Granite State Dog Recovery, a popular site that helps reunited lost dogs and their owners.
It was on Wednesday, about 4 p.m., that a Saugus woman, Regiane Auzec, commented on Granite State Dog Recovery's Facebook page saying "It's my Silver."
Auzec could not immediately be reached for comment Wednesday night.
Ray said she was concerned the dog may have been abandoned, but that an investigation revealed it was not, as well as some even more surprising facts.
Ray said the dog was initially lost at a rest stop along Route 3 in Norwell, as the family was returning to Saugus from Cape Cod.
Ray said the family told her they had been returning to the rest area every day since Monday to call the dog's name and search, and that they even spoke to a Department of Transportation employee on Tuesday.
Ray, wanting to ensure the dog wasn't abandoned, contacted state police, who confirmed they had taken a report about the lost dog from the family on Tuesday after speaking to them at the rest stop.
"She said the family hasn't slept in two nights," Ray said.
Ray said the owner was also able to describe the dog's collar, even though it wasn't visible in the photograph posted of the beagle.
According to Google maps, it's about 50 miles from Norwell to Billerica, depending on the route you take.
"I have no idea how this dog made it all the way to Billerica, but he sure did," Ray said.
Ray said she met with the Auzec family to return Silver on Wednesday about 7:15 p.m.
If there were any lingering doubts about the fact that Ray found the owner, Silver's reaction eliminated them.
"The dog went ballistic," Ray said of the reunion. "I'm happy it worked out for the little guy and that he made it home. He was ecstatic to see them tonight."
