BOSTON -- The Red Sox have won the race to sign highly-regarded Cuban outfielder Rusney Castillo, according to numerous media reports.
Reports put the contract at seven years and $72 million for the 27-year-old Castillo.
He's expected to undergo a physical in Boston Saturday and join the team this weekend. He'll join an outfield that already has another Cuban defector, Yeonis Cespedes.
The team has yet to comment on the reports.
The Red Sox and Detroit Tigers were reportedly the last two of several teams to be in the running for Castillo. It's not known if the presence of Cespedes on the Boston roster helped them sign Castillo.
Because he played five years professionally in Cuba, he is exempt from international signing-bonus pools.
