TYNGSBORO -- The Town Administrator Search Committee is expected to interview candidates soon after receiving 37 applications.
The committee, which has said it would begin reviewing resumes after July 31, will start the process now while accepting additional applications, said Selectman Karyn Puleo.
Puleo serves on the three-member committee along with Selectman William Gramer and town Finance Coordinator Kerry Colburn-Dion.
Puleo said she is pleased the committee has a sizable pool of candidates from which to work.
"It gives us a good field of selection," Puleo said.
If things go smoothly, the committee will start conducting preliminary interviews in about two weeks to whittle down the list of candidates so that it could suggest two to four finalists to the Board of Selectmen, Puleo said. The committee will keep the names of the applicants unless they become finalists. The board will interview finalists in an open meeting.
Puleo, who is on vacation, said she has yet to review any resume and did not know how far the applicants come from. In past town-administrator search processes, the bulk of the applications came from within Massachusetts with some from elsewhere in New England and the Midwest, Puleo said.
The position became available earlier this summer, when Town Administrator Michael Gilleberto took the position as North Reading's new town administrator. Gilleberto's last day in office was July 23 and his employment with the town officially ended Aug. 3 after he took some unused vacation time.
Assistant Town Administrator Nina Nazarian is assuming the responsibility of the town manager.
Gilleberto came into the position in April 2010 after serving as director of operations for the city of Worcester for nearly three and a half years.
Puleo said the fact that Gilleberto, who had never worked as a town administrator, but was hired and gained experience in Tyngsboro may have made the position attractive to candidates who only have second-in-command experiences.
The board has had collegial relationships with its town administrators, which is reflected in the town's financial stability, Puleo said, adding that it may have also contributed to the large pool of candidates.
The town advertised the position with Massachusetts Municipal Association, New Hampshire Municipal Association and LinkedIn.
A copy of the ad posted on the International City/County Management Association lists a salary of $100,000 to $120,000. Gilleberto's salary was about $117,000 when he left.
In addition to "a bachelor's degree in public administration, business or related field and five years of experience in municipal administration or a related field," the board is also looking for knowledge necessary to oversee the operation of municipal government, including budgeting and federal and state regulations, according to the ad.
Puleo said Tyngsboro is a small town and the town administrator is expected to serve many roles. Regardless of whether candidates have the experience of serving as a town administrator, they will need to bring strong administrative and personnel skills among others, Puleo said.
