LOWELL -- Seth Moulton may not be the biggest name in the race for the 6th Congressional District, but he's garnered one high-profile endorsement.
Gen. Stanley McChrystal, who led the Joint Special Operations Command in Iraq and served as the commander of American forces in Afghanistan, gave his first political endorsement Monday, stumping for Moulton in Peabody.
"Seth Moulton and I have both spent our careers working hard, cutting through red tape, and doing what's right even when it's not easy," McChrystal said at the Peabody-Lynn Elks Lodge Monday night.
"That's exactly the kind of leadership we need in Congress today, and that's why I'm proud to support Seth Moulton for Congress. I know Seth will not only work hard to create jobs, expand access to health care, and take care of our veterans, he'll actually get it done."
Moulton, a Marine veteran and Democrat from Salem who served in the Iraq War, is challenging Rep. John Tierney, who has held the 6th District for 18 years. Other opponents in the Democratic primary include immigration lawyer Marisa DeFranco and small-business owner John Devine.
Supporting veterans through health-care reform, job training and an expansion of the G.I. bill has been a hallmark of Moulton's campaign, along with educational reform and economic development for cities like Lynn and Gloucester.
McChrystal's involvement, Moulton said, is a sign that incumbent Tierney has not been effective in Congress.
"The fact that Gen. McChrystal is getting involved in this Democratic primary race is because so many people are seeing this story of a young, pragmatic veteran taking on a hyperpartisan, entrenched and ineffective congressman as emblematic of the kind of change we need in Washington," Moulton said.
Moulton said the endorsement from McChrystal was an honor.
"It means a lot because the biggest challenge for me in my race is simply getting the name recognition. When people understand the facts in the race and compare my background to Congressman Tierney's, I'm in very good shape," Moulton said.
The 6th Congressional District includes the towns of Bedford, Billerica, Burlington, Tewksbury and Wilmington, along with cities and towns in Essex County.
