BILLERICA -- The Billerica Recreation Department has warned residents of a "serious outbreak of large bees in the ground" of all town and school fields.
The notice, issued Tuesday on the department's Facebook page, said a member of the school department's maintenance division called the infestation "the worst he has ever seen."
The Recreation Department advises steering clear of the bee-infested holes, or marking the areas for others to avoid.
This is problematic, as all six levels of Billerica Pop Warner held their first practices Monday night at various fields across the community.
"We've been spraying," said Bob Turkette, president of Billerica Pop Warner. "We spray every night."
Kevin McCarthy, the director of school maintenance, could not be reached for comment.
