HUDSON, N.H. -- Pond swimmers, beware.

The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services is warning swimmers to steer clear of Otternic Pond in Hudson, due to the presence of cyanobacteria.

The bacteria, which has turned the pond water cloudy and greenish-blue, can cause symptoms including skin irritation, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Chronic exposure can lead to liver and central nervous system damage, according to a statement from DES.

Although the pond has not been closed, direct contact with the water is discouraged.

The warning will remain in effect until bacteria levels decrease. Until then, DES will test the water weekly.
