CHELMSFORD -- Police have charged two men with a robbery of the Citizens Bank branch at Chelmsford Street on July 15.

Stephen Callahan, 55, and Stephen Delong, 53, both of Lawrence, were charged with armed robbery. Delong is accused of being the getaway driver and was also charged with misleading a police investigation, according to a press release.

Callahan jumped over the counter and demanded the tellers empty the drawers into a plastic bag, according to police. Witnesses told police the robber ran through the woods towards Chelmsford Mall where he got into a red pickup truck.

Police traced the license plate of a 1997 Subaru owned by the girlfriend of Delong, according to police. A responding officer saw a folding knife through the car's windshield at Delong's apartment.

Callahan was arrested after trying to rob a Santander branch in Lawrence, according to police.

Delong is scheduled to be arraigned in Lowell District Court today. Callahan will appear in Lawrence District Court first.
