LOWELL - In light of the terrible tragedy today, Lowell Sun Charities is making a $2,500 contribution to The Branch Street Fire Victims Relief Fund, hoping that others who can afford to donate will do the same.

"We offer our sympathies to the victims families of this devastating fire which has taken seven lives and injured others," said Mark O'Neil, the newspaper's president and publisher. "With this contribution, we ask that others consider doing the same to help families who have lost loved ones and possessions."

The fund was launched Thursday morning, hours after fire and police officials responded to the 4 a.m. fire and discovered the loss of life, according to Lowell Mayor Rodney Elliott.
