LOWELL -- A dog is being quarantined in its owner's home for 10 days after it allegedly bit a 2-year-old boy on the wrist Friday afternoon at a home on Temple Street.

Police were called to 52 Temple St., off Chelmsford and Liberty streets, about 6:20 p.m., when someone called police and reported a 2-year-old was bitten and bleeding heavily.

Police said the dog bit the boy on the wrist. The boy appeared calm as he was walked outside to an ambulance with gauze around his wrist. Police said he was taken to Lowell General Hospital to have the injury evaluated.

The dog lives at 64 Temple St., and remained calm at the feet of a woman on the porch as police stood guard. That woman declined to comment.

Police said it appears the dog was off its leash and not licensed. The dog will be quarantined in its home for 10 days, according to police.

An animal-control officer will follow up with the owner at a later date to issue citations, according to police.
