DRACUT -- Karina Shepard, a 2014 graduate of Dracut High School, has been named the Massachusetts Gatorade Athlete of the Year for girls outdoor track for the second straight year.
Shepard enjoyed a record-shattering spring season for the Middies on her way to Stanford University.
She won the All-State championship at 800 meters with a personal-best time of 2:07.14, breaking a 12-year-old meet record.
That breathtaking run came on the heels of a 2:13.12 time in winning the EMass. Division 3 title, a clocking that broke a 15-year-old meet record.
Then, at the New Balance National Championship meet last week in Greensboro, N.C., she posted a time of 2:07.16 to finish fourth in the country.
A National Honor Society student with a 4.46 weighted GPA and a dedicated local volunteer, Shepard was The Sun's 2013 Female Athlete of the Year. The daughter of Ted and Patricia Shepard leaves Dracut High with 11 school track records to her credit.
