LOWELL -- An unidentified individual was killed in a two-car crash on Pawtucket Boulevard on Wednesday afternoon, according to the Middlesex District Attorney's Office.

Witnesses at the crash, across from Heritage Ice Cream on the east side of Route 113, said a Saturn sedan came down the boulevard, traveling faster than 70 mph. The sedan hit a Toyota SUV and then slammed into a tree, according to witnesses.

"It's so sad," said Tony Mennella, who lives right around the corner from the crash. "There seems to be so many accidents around this stretch."

Chris Phat, of Lowell, was going to take a run along the Merrimack River but then he heard brakes screeching, followed by the crash. He said CPR was administered to the victim for about 15 minutes before emergency personnel let up.

Two individuals were taken to the hospital from the Toyota SUV, according to witnesses.

Caroline Coffey, of Lowell, was walking along the river when she saw the Saturn sedan speeding by.

"I couldn't believe how fast the car was moving," Coffey said. "It's giving me goosebumps right now still being here."

The east side of Route 113 was closed from the Rourke Bridge to Mammoth Road as police continued to investigate the fatal accident and reconstruct the scene. Significant delays over the next few hours were expected.

Police at the scene would not comment.
