WESTFORD -- The town library has been awarded a $50,000 grant to study future upgrades and expansion.

The J.V. Fletcher Memorial Library was chosen for the planning grant by The Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, Library Director Ellen Rainville said in a press release.

"We are thrilled to receive a grant award that allows us to take this step forward in ensuring responsive, state-of-the-art library service for Westford's future," Rainville said.

The planning and design phase will allow the town to be considered for a construction grant in 2016 or 2017.

A design of the future Fletcher Library would address the inadequacies identified in the 2013 Library Needs Assessment, plus incorcoprate new and future trends in service, programs, collections, formats and outreach within the anticipated new space, according to the statement.
