LOWELL -- The City Council voted 9-0 Tuesday night to appoint Hannah York, a certified public accountant from Texas, as the city's new auditor.

York, 35, has worked for just under five years in the Travis County Auditor's Office in Austin, Texas. She currently serves as a financial auditor/analyst in that office and lives in Austin.

York, who the council interviewed via video, was chosen from among five finalists.

The council voted to appoint York to a three-year term and has tasked Mayor Rodney Elliott and City Solicitor Christine O'Connor with meeting with York to discuss salary.

Some councilors told The Sun afterward they thought York had a great interview and that she has the experience to do the job.

"I like the fact that she is a CPA," said City Councilor John Leahy. "She has the personality for the job and was the total package."

City Councilor Ed Kennedy said he thinks several of the finalists could have handled the job, but York was a stand-out among the group.

"What you want is an independent watchdog," Kennedy said. "I'm not so sure that her predecessor was all that independent all the time, so I think that will be a fresh change, having someone who is totally independent and working in the best interests of the City Council."

York told The Sun in a phone interview after Tuesday's meeting she was grateful for the council's support and hopes to start on June 9.

"I'm just thrilled," York said. "I'm really excited to get up there and get to work."

York said she expects to be busy in her new job working on year-end reports, as the city's fiscal year ends June 30.

City Auditor Sheryl Wright retired in late February and Karen O'Beirne has been serving as acting auditor since Wright stepped down.

The council voted last month to restart the search process after several finalists withdrew from consideration.

A dozen applicants applied this round. O'Beirne did not apply for the permanent position.

The city auditor is responsible for the approval, payment and recording of all financial transactions for the city, and works for the City Council.
