BILLERICA -- An unidentified man had to be extricated from his front windshield after crashing his car into a utility pole on Boston Road Friday evening, fire officials said.

The man had a "medical episode" before his minivan broke the utility pole in the Pinehurst neighborhood of Billerica, next to Pasho Road, according to Billerica Fire Capt. Eric Szymanski. The man was conscious and alert when he was transported to Lahey Clinic, he said. His conditon was not immediately available.

At 7:37 p.m., firefighters responded to 705 Boston Road for the single-car crash. Firefighters used an ax to remove the windshield of the minivan, which was "smashed up pretty good," Szymanski said.

The traffic delays weren't too bad, he added, as there was enough space to get two lanes open for traffic.
