SALISBURY (AP) -- Police in Salisbury say officers have fatally shot a stabbing suspect who allegedly threatened them with a machete.

The Daily News of Newburyport reports police said the confrontation followed a collision between a police SUV and the suspect's car.

Police tell the newspaper that Chief Thomas Fowler, Sgt. Robert Roy and Officer Michael Alder were responding to an incident on Cable Avenue in which a man reportedly had attacked two people with a machete. They were en route when the car crash occurred.

Police said the man approached the officers carrying the machete and was shot after he did not stop or drop the weapon.

Police said Flower and Alder have been taken to a hospital for evaluation.

The Essex district attorney is investigating, as is standard procedure.
