LOWELL -- The snack bar in the basement of City Hall has been closed in connection with an ongoing criminal investigation involving a registered sex offender who worked there, The Sun has learned.

Both City Manager Kevin Murphy and Police Capt. Kelly Richardson confirmed the closure is related to an active criminal investigation, but declined to release further details.

"It is an ongoing police investigation and I can't comment further at this time," said Murphy.

The city manager fired the man under investigation, who was provided to the city by the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind.

The registered sex offender under investigation is James Holland, The Sun has learned.

One at least one occasion Holland showed an inappropriate picture to a woman at City Hall, a source told The Sun.

A call to the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind was not returned Tuesday afternoon. A sign above the snack bar says it is licensed by the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind.

When the snack bar will re-open is unclear.
