LOWELL -- City firefighters rescued three tropical birds and a cat as they fought to contain a one-alarm fire to the basement of a home on Waterford Street in the Pawtucketville section night.

Firefighters were called to 11 Waterford St., about 9:45 p.m., and found heavy fire in the basement of the home.

A male resident was home watching television at the time, but he escaped under his own power.

Deputy Fire Chief Patrick McCabe said no one was injured. The cause remains under investigation but does not initially appear suspicious, according to McCabe.

The blaze was under control a little after 10 p.m.

McCabe said there was heavy damage in the basement of the home, but that crews prevented the blaze from causing heavy damage to the home's upper floors.
