LOWELL -- A prosecutor from outside Middlesex County will be asked to handle the assault case against the wife of a Lowell police officer.

Tiffany Perry, 32, is accused of headbutting her husband, Lowell Police Officer Timothy Golden, 48, last Novemeber. She has pleaded not guilty to charges of domestic assault and battery. Perry denies the allegations.

Prosecutor Lauren Kupersmith told a judge on Wednesday that the Middlesex district attorney's office has sought outside counsel. Typically use of an out-of-county prosecutor is hired to avoid any appearance of a conflict of interest, officials said.

Golden obtained a restraining order against his wife. Perry's next court date is May 28 for compliance.

In December 2012 Golden was embroiled in a domestic dispute with his ex-wife, Meara Kennedy-Golden, now Meara Otero. Kennedy-Golden, then 32, was charged with breaking and entering with the intent to commit a felony and larceny over $250 for allegedly breaking into Golden's Mount Hope Street home and ransacking it. Conversely, Kennedy-Golden and her mother took out restraining orders against Golden.

A month later, the charges and the restraining orders were dropped.
